Organization at a Glance

Society for People’s Advancement (SPA) is a non-political, non-religious and not-for-profit Non-Government Organization (NGO) for social development in Bangladesh.

It was established in 1998 by few young energetic social elites with a mission to enable sustainable development through empowerment of the poor.

We are especially focused on empowering the very poor families with widows and children. Through empowerment, the poor are organised and made aware of the real causes of their impoverishment, their material resources are mobilised, income and employment are increased, and capacities are developed to cope with natural disasters.

Empowerment makes the poor functionally literate, enables them to take better care of their health, get elected in local community institutions, and provides the poor with better access to common property resources.

SPA programmes include building organisations of the poor, training in skill development, children education, promotion of self-reliance through employment and income generating activities and provision of small grants in various forms such as cash, food, clothes, houses, medical care etc., small enterprise development, development support to communication, health education and infrastructure building, mother and child development.

Women make up roughly half of the population, and their needs, experiences, voices, and concerns need to be represented at decision making tables. We believe empowerment and economic inclusion of women creates opportunity for upward mobility in education, business etc. This provides expertise, income, and financial growth that would have otherwise not existed, were the woman to rely solely on her husband’s or family’s income.

Mission:

SPA plans to equip the very poor citizens of the society with requisite skills, knowledge, income employment schemes and activities to elevate the socio-economic status of the society.

SPA organizes the distressed and powerless people through support, rehabilitation, motivation and awareness to direct their lives meaningfully towards betterment -physically, mentally and socially.

Through awareness building and educational support, SPA hopes to increase the literacy rate, setting up various income generating projects for economic rehabilitation & socio-economic development of the under-privileged people in the community.

SPA intends to establish sustainable livelihoods for the disadvantaged women and children so that they can fight with poverty and injustice.

SPA emphasizes on people’s participation in need assessment, planning, implementation and decision-making process for making the program socially accepted, people’s oriented and sustainable for years to come.

SPA envisions to alleviate poverty, hunger, illiteracy, ill-health & civic inertia among the poor villagers of Bangladesh.

Vision:

To establish a society free from exploitation, oppression and deprivation, where every individual regardless of color, race, religion, and gender pursue their dream with equal opportunity and meritocracy is practiced in its true sense.
